Why I Prefer Documentary/Lifestyle Photoshoots (And What a Photo Session Like This Looks Like With Me!)

Misc., Behind the Scenes

"Life is full of chaos; let's capture some of yours."

I love seeing real smiles in photos. Everything from the smile lines by someone's eyes, to the overall energy of the image- It's just better, in my opinion. Posed portraits are nice, but can be stressful; especially when you add kids or adults who don't want to be there into the mix. And honestly, who could blame them? Being in front of the camera can be a nerve-wracking experience- right hand here, left hand there, chin down, eyes up- It's a lot to remember!

I'd be lying to say I do no posing at all, but I like to give cues and prompts, or ask questions more than I do posing. You might have to whisper your favourite candy bar into your child's ears, or twirl your partner until you're both laughing. During the warmer months, I like to bring things like chalk and bubbles to sessions that include children. Parents can take a break for a minute or two (or can join in on the fun!) and it makes for incredible portraits of kids doing what they were meant to do- play, and have fun. The smiles and giggles turn into a memory that's been frozen in time.

It's also not uncommon for sessions with children to take place at a park that has a playground, for the same reason. Playing on the park can be a "break" from photos for the kids- they're too busy having fun to worry about the camera, and can easily be a family bonding moment that is captured and can be kept forever.

The genuine moments and real smiles. are things I live for. The chaos of the unplanned is something I thrive in. So let's get together and capture some of yours.
